To use the latest advances in machine vision technology to build
software and assistive devices for blind and visually impaired persons.
For example:
If a street sign is too far away for someone to read,
they want to make a device that will read the sign
for the person using digital imaging and then speak
out the name of the street sign over an audio speaker:
The steps to do this are:
- Take a picture of the street sign using a portable device
(E.g.: a fancy digital camera).
- Run a machine vision algorithm over the digital picture to
discover the name of the street on the street sign.
- Read the name of the street aloud over an audio speaker.
